Our school reflects our values in all that we do. We aim to nurture our children on their journey through life so they can grow into safe, caring, democratic, responsible and tolerant adults who make a positive difference to British society and to the world. We encourage our children to be respectful of themselves and of others in our school, our local community and the wider world. We promote building up trust through actively developing positive relationships and encourage pride to be taken in all aspects of children’s school and home lives. We aim to continually improve all aspects of school life with the ultimate aim of all stakeholders enjoying happiness within our community.

At Highwood, we actively promote British values in the following ways:

Democracy

The principle of democracy is consistently being reinforced at Highwood, with democratic processes being used for important decisions within the school community, for instance, elections being held for House Captains and Pupil Voice members. The principle of democracy is also explored in the relevant curriculum areas, as well as in assemblies. 

Rule of Law

The importance of laws, whether they just apply to the school or the community, is consistently reinforced at Highwood. Students are taught the rules and expectations of the school which are highlighted by the student code of conduct and student expectations. Students are taught the value and the reasons behind laws that govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service reinforce this message.

The school’s Behaviour and Anti-Bullying policies set out a zero tolerance for any form of aggression, abuse or violence, which extends to pupils, staff and parents and carers.

Individual Liberty

Pupils are actively encouraged to make independent choices, with the knowledge that they are in a safe, secure and supportive environment. Staff at Highwood educate and provide boundaries for children to make informed choices, supporting them with aspects of safety, including e-safety, where necessary. Our work in PSHE challenges stereotypes and explores many anti-bullying strategies. 

Highwood has a robust system of logging behavioural and safeguarding incidents to monitor patterns and ensure the safety of all our children.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

Respect is a strong part of Highwood’s Values. Pupils learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect and this is reiterated through its teaching and learning environments.

Mutual respect is embraced throughout the curriculum by providing the opportunity for children to express their cultural differences in a safe environment.

Promoting British Values

Highwood Primary School is committed to serving its community. We recognise the multi-cultural, multi faith of our community and the ever-changing nature of the United Kingdom. We also understand the role we have in ensuring that groups or individuals within the school are not subjected to inappropriate influences and staff have been trained in identifying the Signs of Safety through our Prevent training against radicalisation.

We follow equal opportunities guidance which guarantees that there will be no discrimination against any individual or group, regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, political or financial status, or similar. Highwood is dedicated to preparing students for their adult life beyond, ensuring that it promotes and reinforces British values to all its students.
